Η DC Comics τελείωσε τον Μπάτμαν στο Detective Comics 853 (θα επιστρέψει στο μέλλον με ένα reboot) με μια ιστορία που έγραψε ο Νιλ Γκέιμαν, και θα κυκλοφορήσει σε βιβλίο τον Ιούλιο. Διάβασε την ωραία συνέντευξη που έδωσε στο Wired εδώ.

Continuity isn’t actually something that I ever worry about. You use it where you need to, and you don’t use it where you don’t need to. It’s a given that we exist in a world where we have to live in continuity every day; no one is immune to that, in life or romance novels. By the same token, it’s not something I find terribly important.

The joy of this Batman story is that there were 70 years of Batman and I wanted to try and talk about all of it. Alan’s last Superman story is every bit as readable as it was in 1985, and it doesn’t actually matter that nobody remembers the Luthor/Brainiac team any more, or even necessarily remembers the typical Superman trope of squeezing coal into diamonds. None of that matters, because it is a glorious story.

Ο Στίβεν Τζόνσον γράφει στη Wall Street Journal με πολύ ενθουσιασμό. Έχει δίκιο ή δεν ξέρει τι του γίνεται;

«…the book’s migration to the digital realm would not be a simple matter of trading ink for pixels, but would likely change the way we read, write and sell books in profound ways. It will make it easier for us to buy books, but at the same time make it easier to stop reading them. It will expand the universe of books at our fingertips, and transform the solitary act of reading into something far more social. It will give writers and publishers the chance to sell more obscure books, but it may well end up undermining some of the core attributes that we have associated with book reading for more than 500 years».

Δεν είναι κακό (ποτέ δεν μπορείς να πεις «κακό» κάτι που γράφει ο Σεντάρις) αλλά αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι αξίζει και τα λεφτά του. Όχι απαραίτητα. Το review.

Σπάνια διαβάζω τα διηγήματα στον New Yorker (είναι συνήθως βαρετά), αλλά τις προάλλες έκανα μιαν εξαίρεση: Τζοναθαν Λέθεμ! Επιστημονική φαντασία!

Το Lostronauts λέει την ιστορία ενός πληρώματος διαστημικού σταθμού που είναι παγιδευμένοι σε τροχιά, ανήμποροι να επιστρέψουν. Η ιστορία είναι γραμμένη με τη μορφή επιστολών που στέλνει η μοναδική γυναίκα στο σταθμό στον αγαπημένο της κάτω στη Γη. Όχι τέλειο, αλλά όχι κι άσχημο.

We’re soaring atoms, Chase, that’s what orbit consists of, the inhuman hastening of infinitesimal specklike bodies through an awesome indifferent void, yet in our cramped homely craft, its rooms named to evoke childhood comforts, with our blobs of toothpaste drifting between our brushes and the mirror, our farts and halitosis filling the chambers with odor, we’ve defaulted to an illusion of substance. Του πήρε μόνο πέντε χρόνια -προφανώς τόσο χρειάστηκε για να φάει τα λεφτά. Ο Νταν Μπράουν, συγγραφέας του ανεκδιήγητου και ανεκδιήγητα επιτυχημένου «Κώδικα  Ντα Βίντσι» και άλλων, ακόμα χειρότερων faux-θρίλερ, επιστρέφει στις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου με το νέο του βιβλίο. Θα λέγεται «The Lost Symbol» (σύμβολα! μυστικισμός!) και θα έχει ως θέμα του τη Μασονία (μασόνοι! μυστικισμός!). Ήρωας θα είναι πάντα ο πιο-άχρωμος-κι-απ’-τον-Τομ-Χανκς επιστήμων Ρόμπερτ Λάνγκντον, και η πλοκή θα διαδραματίζεται ολόκληρη σε μισή μέρα. Ελπίζω να διαβάζεται σε ακόμα λιγότερο!

Οι προπαραγγελίες στο Amazon έχουν ήδη ξεκινήσει(duh!).

Την έδωσε με email, άρα γραπτά, άρα είναι σαν να διαβάζεις ένα βιβλίο του. Στη συγκεκριμένη συνέντευξη ο Έγκερς μιλάει κυρίως για το ίδρυμα που προέκυψε από τη συνεργασία του με το νεαρό Σουδανό Βαλεντίνο Τσενγκ, του οποίου τη βιογραφία έγραψε στο «What is the What«. Το ίδρυμα εκπαιδεύει εκπατρισμένους Σουδανούς.

The person who says «Enough innovation, let’s stick with what we have and never change» is pretty much the sworn enemy of all art.

Η Ελλάδα έχει λίγο καλύτερη λογοτεχνία από αυτή που αξίζει. Δεν είναι τόσο χάλια. Είναι καλύτερη από πολλές όψεις της νεοελληνικής ζωής.
