I don’t like Salinger, not at all. That last thing isn’t a novel anyway, whatever it is. I don’t like it. Not at all. It suffers from this terrible sort of metropolitan sentimentality and it’s so narcissistic. And to me, also, it seemed so false, so calculated. Combining the plain man with an absolutely megalomaniac egotism. I simply can’t stand it.

Το 1864 ο μαθηματικός Τσαρλς Ντότζσον χάρισε σε ένα μικρό κορίτσι ονόματι Άλις ένα παραμύθι που έγραψε γι’ αυτή. Λεγόταν «Alice’s Adventures Under Ground», ήταν 90 σελίδες και περιείχε 37 σκίτσα. Ο Ντότζσον το υπέγραφε ως «Λούις Κάρολ». Μπορείς να το δεις ολόκληρο εδώ.

Many years later, Alice was forced to sell her precious manuscript at auction. It was bought by an American collector, but returned to England in 1948 when a group of American benefactors presented it to the British Library in appreciation of the British people’s role in the Second World War.

Πέθανε σήμερα, στα 91 του. Ευκαιρία να διαβάσεις τα 13 διηγήματά του στον New Yorker (περιλαμβάνονται και τα «Franny» και «Zooey») και βέβαια να αγοράσεις το Catcher in the Rye αν δεν το έχεις ήδη.
