Listen, your Pincus is awful hard on the poets. I thought I was hard on the poets. Well, I’m glad I get by him. And he’s right on WAITING. Only if the octipus has you in its tentacals you can’t wait too long.

On WAITING I know what he means. Too many writers write for the wrong reasons. They want to get famous or they want to get rich or they want to get laid by the girls with bluebells in their hair. (Maybe that last ain’t a bad idea).

When everything works best it’s not because you chose writing but because writing chose you. It’s when you’re mad with it, it’s when it’s stuffed in your ears, your nostrils, under your fingernails. It’s when there’s no hope but that.

Once in Atlanta, starving in a tar paper shack, freezing. There were only newspapers for a floor. And I found a pencil stub and I wrote on the white margins of the edges of those newspapers with the pencil stub, knowing that nobody would ever see it. It was a cancer madness. And it was never work or planned or part of a school. It was. That’s all.

And why do we fail? It’s the age, something about the age, our Age. For half a century there has been nothing., No real breakthrough, no newness, no blazing energy, no gamble.

What? Who? Lowell? That grasshopper? Don’t sing me crap songs.

We do what we can and we don’t do very well.

Strictured. Locked. We pose at it.

We work too hard. We try too hard.

Don’t try. Don’t work. It’s there. It’s been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb.

There’s been too much direction. It’s all free, we needn’t be told.

Classes? Classes are for asses.

Ένα θαυμάσιο tumblr blog με φωτογραφίες από βιβλιοθήκες, ραφάκια και όλα τα ευφάνταστα μέρη όπου οι άνθρωποι αποθηκεύουν τα βιβλία τους.

Ο Guardian ζήτησε από διάσημους συγγραφείς να γράψουν μερικούς κανόνες που ακολουθούν για τη συγγραφή. Η ιδέα ξεκίνησε από τον Έλμερ Λέοναρντ, που έχει γράψει και σχετικό βιβλίο. Συγγραφείς όπως ο Ρόντι Ντόιλ, ο Τζόναθαν Φράντσεν και ο Νιλ Γκέιμαν δίνουν τις συμβουλές τους εδώ. Ο Ίαν Ράνκιν, η Τζόις Κάρολ Όουτς και άλλοι λένε τα δικά τους εδώ. Όπως καταλαβαίνεις, οι «συμβουλές» χρησιμεύουν περισσότερο για επίδειξη του εκάστοτε ταλέντου/εγώ παρά για πραγματική εφαρμογή.

Never use the words «suddenly» or «all hell broke loose». This rule doesn’t require an explanation. I have noticed that writers who use «suddenly» tend to exercise less control in the application of exclamation points.

Put it aside. Read it pretending you’ve never read it before. Show it to friends whose opinion you respect and who like the kind of thing that this is.

Unless you are writing something very avant-garde – all gnarled, snarled and «obscure» – be alert for possibilities of paragraphing.

Mιας και είστε εξειδικευμένοι στο είδος ήθελα να σας ειδοποιήσω για Τα Πρωινά Μετά – ένα πείραμα γραφής που κάνω κάτω από την πρωτοβουλία National Novel Writing Month 09 (NaNoWriMo). Ελπίζω ότι δεν θα θεωρήσετε το e-mail spam.

Στόχος του NaNoWriMo είναι οι συμμετέχοντες να γράψουν ένα μυθιστόρημα 50.000 λέξεων από την 1η μέχρι την 30η Νοεμβρίου. Η λογική των διοργανωτών είναι ότι όλοι οι επίδοξοι συγγραφείς αγχώνονται τόσο με την τελειότητα και τις κατάλληλες λέξεις που τελικά δεν τελειώνουν ποτέ μια ιστορία. Το NaNoWriMo ενθαρρύνει τους συμμετέχοντες απλά να γράψουν χωρίς να σκέφτονται το τέλειο αποτέλεσμα έτσι ώστε να τελειώσουν την ιστορία τους. Νικητές είναι όλοι όσοι καταφέρουν να γράψουν 50.000 λέξεις.

Τα Πρωινά Μετά είναι η ιστορία μιας παρέας. 15 χρόνια πριν τρία αγόρια και ένα κορίτσι γνωρίστηκαν καπνίζοντας στο παρκάκι σε κάποια γειτονιά του Πειραιά – 15 χρόνια μετά επιστρέφουν για το γάμο του ενός. Όσο η ώρα του μυστηρίου πλησιάζει, τόσο η αδυσώπητη σκληρότητα που έχουν δείξει ο ένας στον άλλον στο παρελθόν βγαίνει στην επιφάνεια.

Τα Πρωινά Μετά γράφονται μέσα στο Νοέμβριο από την αφεντιά μου και δεν είναι και βέβαιο ότι θα τα καταφέρω να τα ολοκληρώσω. Το ενδιαφέρον είναι ότι δημοσιεύω αποσπάσματα στο blog μου και στην αντίστοιχη σελίδα στο facebook και μέσα από αυτά τα ‘μέρη’ – όπως επίσης και άλλες υπηρεσίες όπως twitter και friendfeed – έχω βοηθηθεί πάρα πολύ και από άποψη υποστήριξης και από άποψη ενθάρρυνσης. Ενώ δηλαδή η συγγραφή χαρακτηρίζεται ως μία πολύ μοναχική ασχολία φίλοι – γνωστοί και εντελώς άγνωστοι δείχνουν ενδιαφέρον, συζητάνε τους χαρακτήρες και τα μέρη για τα οποία γράφω και μου δίνουν πληροφορίες όταν τις χρειάζομαι ή φωτογραφίες από μέρη που αναφέρω. Οι συζητήσεις online γύρω από το πείραμα και την ιστορία μου είναι ανεκτίμητες και ίσως δείχνουν έναν εναλλακτικό τρόπο γραφής που μπορεί να βοηθήσει τον παραδοσιακά μοναχικό γραφιά.

Μιας και σας διαβάζω τακτικά σκέφτηκα ότι ίσως θα σας ενδιέφερε και η προσπάθεια αλλά και η διαδικασία.

• Starting the story as close to the end as you can. This will assist you in the timing of the story.. and hopefully keeping the word count down by cutting out unnecessary back story.
• Ensuring your story has a point and not a collection of actions. Most readers are looking to be entertained, informed or enriched by a short story. Gift them a message or an experience rather than waste their time with ‘boring bits.’
• Including at last one character they can strongly identify with – either negatively or positively.
